About IR
Who We Are
The Office of Institutional Research (IR) is the central data service unit at San Jose State University. The IR office is dedicated to providing accurate, reliable, and timely information and research to support University decision making, and compliance with state, federal, district, and college requirements. Together, the IR team boasts an impressive range of technical expertise and analytical capabilities that allow us to provide crucial support to the University. Our researchers have extensive experience working with higher education data and are able to effectively interpret and present this data for the rest of the University and various external organizations.

IR Service Scope
The Office of Institutional Research (IR) provides institutional research and assessment support to SJSU's faculty and administration and coordinates certain data sharing with the CSU Chancellor's Office and selected external organizations. These include Educational Testing Service (ETS), Princeton Review, College Board, National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Health (NIH), Wintergreen Orchard House, Peterson’s CollegeData, US News, Silicon Valley Business Journal, and American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE).
IR supports SJSU business-related inquiries for the purpose of improving institutional effectiveness. IR does not fulfill faculty data requests for the purpose of academic research, nor do we fulfill data requests from students. However, IR provided a wide range of institutional reports on our website about students, faculty, staff, courses and survey results. Everyone is welcome to use the data on our website to make reports and presentations about San Jose State University.
It is also important to note that for any ad-hoc data requests, IR can only provide aggregated data as to honor data privacy under the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). We do not provide unit-level data except under some special circumstances. Requests for data about individual students, faculty, and staff should instead be directed to the Registrar’s office or University Personnel. For more information about what data the IR office can and cannot provide, please refer to our data sharing guidelines:
Data Sharing Guidelines
Request IR Services
Please email: institutional-research@sjsu.edu for data requests, questions, or comments.
Note that IR tends to receive a large volume of data requests that can often be very time consuming to complete. We ask that advanced notice be given on any and all service requests:
- For small requests with less than 10 data elements, a two-week notice is needed before the request can be completed.
- For more complex requests with more than 10 data elements, a four week notice is required.
Advanced notice on requests is extremely important in allowing us to make sure we are able to support all clients by their requested due dates.
